Will the real god raise his hand? Izak Cornelius, in his recently published book on iconography, establishes a method for distinguishing between the Canaanite gods Reshef and Ba‘al, who were often similarly depicted with raised arms. Reshef, Cornelius asserts, can be recognized as a god of healing and protection. While his raised arm threatens enemies, his other arm bears a shield.
