The wake of a quake. Broken pottery strewn about a thick layer of ash attests to the violent destruction of Megiddo in about 1020 B.C.E. Although the excavators attributed the damage to King David, such a conflict is not corroborated by the Bible or any other text. Crushed skeletons found in this destruction layer, and the contemporaneous destruction of sites throughout Israel (see map), indicate the damage was caused by earthquake.
