Mistress of the winds, the Egyptian goddess Isis holds a billowing sail on this coin, dating to 238 A.D., of the Roman emperor Maximus. As guardian of pagan seafarers, Isis played a role similar to those saints who were later thought to protect Christian pilgrims.
