“Flavius Josephus, Jewish Historian,” reads the title page of a 1665 Dutch edition of Josephus’s collected works. The volume is illustrated with woodcuts depicting historical and Biblical figures (on the title page, for instance, Moses holds the Tablets of the Law, lower left, and David plays a harp, lower right) as well as various events recounted by Josephus. The volume also includes a translation into Dutch of a fourth-century Latin version of Josephus’s Jewish War, which appeared with the name Egosippus.
