Hundreds of caves dot the limestone cliffs and marl terrace at the edge of the Dead Sea. In the 11 clustered around Qumran and marked on the map, archaeologists and Bedouin found the Dead Sea Scrolls. Cave 4, almost in the settlement, had the largest cache of documents. The caves are numbered in the order that they were found, beginning with Cave 1, where just over 50 years ago, the seven original intact scrolls were found by a Bedouin shepherd tending his flock.
