“The Lord shall reign for ever and ever” (Exodus 15:18) reads the mosaic inscription from the first Samaritan synagogue discovered in Palestine, in 1948, at Sha‘alvim, just north of Jerusalem. The quotation is not only written in Samaritan script but quotes the Samaritan version of this Biblical passage, which spells “for ever” (the second word from the left) as ‘WLM, rather than the Hebrew Bible’s L‘LM. (The entire passage reads, from right to left, “YHWH YMLK ‘WLM W‘D,” with dots separating the words.)
