Greek scholars, like those depicted in a Pompeii mosaic of Plato’s Lyceum, are credited with the theoretical advances that led to the development of sundials like the one perched on the column behind them. The technology rapidly spread; archaeologists have discovered similar sundials throughout the Mediterranean, including a sandstone dial with an Aramean inscription and a marble sundial with a Greek inscription.
