The Deir el-Balah settlement’s jumble of levels and rooms, unlike those at any site previously discovered in Canaan, bewildered its excavators until they determined that it had been an Egyptian administrative center during the 14th century B.C. and, a century later, an Egyptian fortress on the military route known as the Way of Horus (marked in red on the map).
