The first American dig in the Near East was led by John Punnett Peters in 1889. Although organizers from the University of Pennsylvania and the Babylonian Expedition Fund had hoped Peters would lead several more seasons of excavation at Nippur, in Mesopotamia, disputes between him and expedition Assyriologist Herman Hilprecht ended those ambitions in 1891.
