One grave damaged during the clearing is shown here. Designated grave 105 on the plan, it is located on the northeastern side of the site. One of the excavators crouches at the bottom of the tomb’s deep shaft, which extends down about 7 feet from the top of the photo. The burial niche is cut into the side of the shaft, to the excavator’s left. The stones used to seal off its now-empty burial niche are clearly visible in the shaft and on the ground near the excavator’s hand. Zissu speculates that the stones were used to contain the ritual impurity of the corpse.
