Foreign relations. The architectural details of the palace reflect Hazor’s reliance on northern designs. In this photo, the smoothly chiseled slabs of basalt, or orthostats, that line the lower palace facade slightly overlap one another, creating a zigzag pattern in the palace plan. Such a design has parallels in contemporaneous palaces in Syria and Anatolia, but not in Israel.
