Sabotage. The destroyers of Hazor deliberately beheaded this 15-inch tall Canaanite statue of a seated man. In this photo of the statue
in situ, the head lies behind the figure’s high-backed chair. Yigael Yadin discovered the figurine near the entrance to the temple sanctuary in the lower city.
That the destroyers were willing to deface Canaanite and Egyptian statues suggests that they belonged to a different ethnic group. Authors Amnon Ben-Tor and Maria Teresa Rubiato propose the Israelites as the leading candidate.
