The ancient town of Lachish overlooks the plains of Judah. The drawing reconstructs the eighth-century B.C. city, with its double wall, two gateways and a large fortified palace on top of the tell. In the drawing, which looks directly east, a gently sloping road zigzags up the side of the tell, leading through the outer gateway, before veering sharply to the east and proceeding straight up the hill, through the inner wall and into the city.
