Ancient inscriptions indicate that there were cities named Ur, Ura and Urau—any one of them possibly the Biblical Ur—in various locations. One of the major objections to the identification of the southern Ur as Abraham’s home, however, is its great distance—1,000 miles—from Haran. Urfa is significantly closer.
