Garo Nalbandian

Detail of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre from the Madaba map. In the detail, the church is turned upright. The mosaic depiction carefully captures the plan of Constantine’s church.

A monumental staircase, shown as stripes of gray tile, leads up from the Cardo to three entranceways (in yellow). Just above are the yellow gable and red roof of the basilical church. A row of black tiles may represent the open-air courtyard with the rock of Calvary; the Rotunda (shown as a golden dome) marks the traditional Tomb of Jesus.
