From Calvary to the tomb. A cloistered courtyard connects San Sepolcro (the Holy Sepulchre) with Santa Croce (the Holy Cross; shown here) in the Bologna church complex, as it did in the Jerusalem church built by Constantine and rebuilt by the Byzantine emperor in the 11th century. When the Jerusalem church was rebuilt once again in the 12th century, however, the courtyard was eliminated.

The inscription on the basin in the center of the courtyard—“filled with the supper of the Lord”—indicates that it originally stood indoors and held eucharistic bread. Only later was it associated with the basin in which Pilate washed his hands.
