“They came to the tomb, taking the spices that they had prepared … but when they went in, they did not find the body” (Luke 24:3). In this relief from the facade of the tomb of Jesus in Bologna, two of the women carry small anointment jars; the third points toward an accompanying relief (see the cover of this issue), which depicts an angel seated on an empty sarcophagus. According to the Gospel of Mark, when the women entered the Tomb, a young man in a white robe, sitting on the right side of the Tomb, reassured them: “Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised. He is not here” (Mark 16:6).
