Max Frei, then director of the Zurich Police Scientific Laboratory, leans over the Shroud of Turin with a piece of adhesive tape to remove pollen grains embedded in the cloth. Frei, who made two sets of “sticky tape pulls” in the 1970s, believed he had retrieved from the shroud grains from 54 different plants that grow only in Israel and Turkey.
