Jericho Synagogue
Artifact: Byzantine floor mosaic
Location: Just outside modern Jericho, in the West Bank
Inscription: Peace unto Israel (Hebrew, Shalom al Yisroel)
History: Built in the eighth century A.D., the Jericho synagogue featured an elaborate mosaic carpet, primarily geometric in design but also including an image of a Torah ark and this famous medallion depicting, from left to right, three Jewish symbols: a palm frond (lulav), a menorah and a ram’s horn (shofar).
Date destroyed: October 2000.
