Christina Rubio, a student at Complutense University in Madrid, peeps out of a pit in the floor of a Canaanite temple at Hazor, in northern Israel. Called a favissa, the stone-lined pit was used to bury cultic vessels and animal bones—perhaps the remains of animals sacrificed at the temple.
