Cult stands from Lachish. The Bible refers to numerous sanctuaries, and archaeology has uncovered several of them. Yet some sanctuaries to Yahweh have eluded discovery so far. A Judahite sanctuary to Yahweh has never been found at Lachish, for instance, but it must have existed: Cult stands for such a sanctuary are clearly visible on the reliefs excavated at the palace of the Assyrian monarch Sennacherib at Nineveh, which depict the siege at Lachish and its aftermath, when Sennacherib’s soldiers presented their booty to the king.
