An elaborately carved stela from the ancient city of Ugarit in northern Syria depicts the warrior god Ba‘al wielding a club and a lance. Most standing stones produced in the fertile lands of the ancient Near East were worked and shaped. The masseboth erected in the desert, however, were carefully chosen but not carved. Although desert masseboth also represented deities, they did not literally depict them.
