In the Bible and in early church sources, references to Yattir, in southern Judah, led excavators to look there for remains from the Iron Age (1200–587 B.C.E.) or from the fourth century C.E. Instead they unearthed two sixth-century churches, one of which, on a southern spur of the site, had an elaborate, well-preserved mosaic floor.
