Courtesy Yattir excavation

A mosaic floor depicting a lone eagle is among the few decorative flourishes remaining from the church on the northwest slope at Yattir. By the early Islamic period (eighth–ninth century C.E.) this church had been transformed into a home: Excavators discovered domestic pottery here. The church’s decorated mosaic floor had been replaced by a coarse white mosaic. Yattir’s history as an early Christian village had come to an end.
