Changes in the water level of the Dead Sea drastically affect its shape and size. As the map shows, a mere few feet’s difference in the depth below sea level of its surface makes a 30 percent difference in the area it covers: When its surface rises from 1,310 feet below sea level to 1,300 feet below sea level, much of the lake’s flat southern basin, previously dry, becomes inundated.
