A vaulted ceiling has survived intact at Aroer from the Herodian period (first century B.C.–first century A.D.). The ceiling covered an underground storage area that was part of a solidly built complex that may have served as a fortress. Of the discovery of this complex, Biran recalled, “Here is where the students got very excited.”
