Light and shadow. Turner transformed Barry’s sketch of the weed-clogged Pool of Bethesda outside Jerusalem into a light-drenched valley of surpassing beauty. In the lower left corner of the scene, Turner also added a small cluster of people closely examining the wall—a telling detail at the beginning of the age of archaeology.
