Classical cleanliness. A four-seated public latrine at Schola di Triano in Ostia, Italy, is made of marble, a luxurious material not found in most ancient communal latrines. But the design of the toilet seat itself is found throughout the Roman world. The relatively small opening on the top is connected to an opening on the front face of the toilet, which varies in size in different latrines, but is always present.
