The Turkish-era gateway at Aphek looks west, to the outskirts of modern Tel Aviv. Until a recent drought, the headwaters of the Yarkon River could be seen just beyond the gate. The name of the 16th-century A.D. fort, Binar Bashi, alludes to the site’s association with water—it means “Head of the Spring.”
