Tel Dor spreads out over about 3 square miles. In the 1920s, British excavators uncovered two impressive temples adjacent to the shore, dating to the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Since 1980, Stern’s team has dug in seven excavation areas. The area where the Gorgon’s head was found was area D2, on the southern edge of the tell. Ancient Dor’s main harbor was situated just below area D2. Many of the city’s residences were in area C, while remains of the eastern city gate have been found in area B. (As on most maps, north is at the top here; the photo at the beginning of the article looks to the southwest).
