Digital reconstructions of the two Omrit temples hint at their original splendor. The earlier building is an example of the widespread first-century B.C.E. “emperor cult,” in which the Roman emperor was honored as a god. Throughout the empire, local rulers loyal to Rome—including Herod in Israel—erected lavish temples to the “divine Augustus” as symbols of their allegiance.
