Meanwhile, at the annual meeting of the American Schools of Oriental Research (ASOR) across town, scholar David Stronach delivered a fascinating—and heart-rending—lecture on the destruction of Afghanistan’s antiquities. In one of the slides he showed, a merchant hawks a sack of ancient coins looted from Afghanistan in a bazaar in Peshawar, Pakistan.
