ON THE COVER: Martin Wells, a member of the Dor excavation team, proudly cradles a statue of Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, as area supervisor Catherine McGowan looks on. Dor, on the northern coast of Israel, boasts a history stretching back to the 20th century B.C. The limestone statue was found in a late second-century B.C. pit; other items found with it or nearby has led the excavators to suspect that they have found the remnants of a Hellenistic temple, perhaps destroyed by Alexander Jannaeus in about 100 B.C.
