These plans show the monastery’s two main phases. In its second phase (shown here), from the mid-sixth century C.E. until the Persian conquest of Jerusalem in 614 C.E., the monastery occupied a much smaller area; the northern area served as a public kitchen, and shops occupied the southern area.
