PRAISE FROM AN EMPRESS. This inscription from Hammat-Gader bears the name and title of Empress Eudocia, the wife of Emperor Theodosius II (408–450 A.D.). The Greek text is a poem celebrating the spa’s healing powers, and it is thought to have been composed on the occasion of the empress’s visit to the baths. The poem mentions several individuals as well as personalities from Greek mythology associated with healing, including Hygieia and Paean, the physician of the gods.
