HIGH PLACES. The elevated stone structure at left show what remains of a temple in Tel Dan, in Israel’s far north. The temple was just one of several sanctuaries throughout ancient Judah and Israel. Referred to in the Bible as “high places,” they were excoriated by the prophets. Judahite kings, most notably Hezekiah, abolished these local sites in order to centralize worship in Jerusalem.
