After Herod’s circus fell into disuse in about the beginning of the fourth century C.E., part of the structure was converted into an amphitheater by closing off the southern half of the circus with a wall (marked on the plan). The amphitheater was a Roman invention used for gladiatorial combat and combat with wild animals. The wall was therefore necessary to keep the animals from escaping. Another wall separated the arena from the seats.
