STANDING TALL AGAIN: The photographs show stages involved in the restoration of the broken and fragmentary obelisk that once stood at the center of the eastern circus at Caesarea. The Israel Antiquities Authority first convened a committee that looked into both the ethics and the feasibility of the project. After the committee approved the idea, the excavators went to work. Here part of the obelisk is being lowered into place. The excavators think a red granite block they found was the original pedestal, but since they weren’t sure they elected to place the obelisk on a new one. The pieces are held together by a special glue and titanium bars.
