A room with a view. The picture shows how excavators worked the site by exposing small “rooms” of the wreck while covering the surrounding area with protective sandbags. The divers caused sand to fall away from the room by digging trenches to the left and right of the wreck. They then carefully recorded, measured, photographed and finally recovered the room’s contents. When they were done, they covered the room with sandbags, thus sealing the ship. The next day they simply moved the “frame” over and uncovered another room.
