This Megiddo six-chambered gate is credited by most archaeologists to King Solomon, who is described by 1 Kings 9:15 as having fortified this city. If that view is correct, the gate stands as proof of the Biblical depiction of Solomon’s kingdom as a significant entity with wealth and power. Israel Finkelstein of Tel Aviv University, however, has challenged the Biblical narrative by questioning the dating of this gate. The Meggido gate, he claims, dates to the ninth century B.C.E, a century after Solomon’s reign.
