Secret Mark offers a different version of the Biblical story of Jesus raising a man from the dead than does the Gospel of John. The miracle is popular in Christian art; the painting above, The Resurrection of Jesus, was made by Juan de Flandes (1465–1519). While John first places Jesus at Bethany “beyond the Jordan,” the site of his baptism, and then has him coming to the Bethany near Jerusalem to bring the dead man back to life, Secret Mark has the entire miracle taking place in the Bethany on the eastern bank of the Jordan River.
