Was it covered by insurance? A skull found among the remains in the Dan tomb was trephinated—a hole (lower right in drawing) was cut in the skull to relieve pressure. Apparently the individual lived to tell of the grisly procedure: Evidence of healing in the bone around the hole shows that he survived the operation. Trephination is the oldest known form of skull surgery.
