Damaged goods. Part of the ivory pomegranate, including some of the inscription, is broken off. The authors of a new paper suggest that two other portions, along the shoulder of the object, were inadvertently broken by a modern-day forger while adding the inscription. If they are right, however, the forger would be an odd combination of master deceiver and bumbler.
