Along the Via Maris, the principal Roman road through ancient Palestine, milestones mark the way. This second-century marker, lauding Emperor Hadrian, was found at Capernaum along an extension of the Via Maris that breaks from the main road at Caesarea and continues on to Damascus. It was the main road for pilgrims and travelers to follow on their way to visit the places named in the Bible. In the Onomasticon, Eusebius states the distance between Biblical sites by reference to the mile markers that lined this ancient Roman road.
