Facing Mecca, this mihrab, or prayer niche, was built into the southern wall of the “Large Octagon” during the third phase of the church, after the Arab conquest in the seventh century. Muslims sometimes converted the southern portion of existing churches into mosques in areas they had conquered so that they, too, could worship there. This seems to have been the case with the Kathisma Church.
