Shackled hand and foot, a demon is depicted on the inside of this incantation bowl. Drawings were often placed at the center, and bound demons were a common subject for these illustrations. Perhaps the graphic representations were understood as a kind of sympathetic magic. Just as the demon was shown bound on the bowl, so too, the suppliant hoped, would it be rendered harmless in real life.
