Climbing carefully up Warren’s Shaft in 1999, BAR editor Hershel Shanks came to his own conclusions on whether the shaft was used to draw water, but there is no agreement among scholars on this much-debated idea. Avraham Faust argues that not only is it possible to draw water from the shaft, but the ancient Israelites used it for that purpose. Aryeh Shimron disagrees: Just because it can be used to draw water, doesn’t mean it ever was used to do so.
