Chunks of fluted columns are all that remain where the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus once stood for more than a thousand years. In the 15th century, the Crusaders systematically dismantled it to retrieve the stone blocks to fortify their castle, which overlooks Bodrum’s harbor on the southern coast of modern Turkey.
