Mary Harrsch

A MANED PROTECTOR. This lion is partially responsible for the excavation of the Mausoleum. Parts of four lion sculptures from the Mausoleum were incorporated into the walls of the Crusader castle. In the 19th century, the British ambassador to the Sublime Porte received permission to display them in London. As a result, an expedition from the British Museum sailed to Turkey in 1856 to explore the ruins (and, of course, bring back what they could to the museum).
