White stone steps lead up to the podium on which Herod’s temple to Augustus once stood at Samaria/Sebaste. The temple was located on the summit of the hill, directly over the ruins of an Iron Age palace built by Israelite kings. (These steps are located—although not visible—at the upper right portion of the ruins.) The remains of the royal Israelite palace can still be seen beyond the steps in the foreground of the photograph.
